The Bench

Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn

16 July–11 September 2005

"Every other day Reger visits the Art Historical Museum in Vienna and sits down on a bench because here he can think so well, much better than in the Ambassador, he says." Thomas Bernhard, Old Masters: A Comedy, 1985

'The Bench' is an exhibition that demands a slow and consuming act of looking, thereby consciously establishing a contrast to our "accelerated society“ (Peter Glotz). The content of the exhibited works can only be approached through repeated contemplation of their visual structure. This process of perception is rich and utterly inexhaustible. The limits of a consumable structure are purposefully abandoned in favor of visual overflow: Instead of consuming artworks as a viewer, the works themselves consume us in their delay of an unending process of perception.

The exhibition was conceived and initially shown at Neue Kunsthalle St. Gallen, 9 April to 12 June 2005
