Dresscode
Ethnographic Museum, St. Gallen
3 September 2006–7 January 2007

In 'Dresscode' clothes were interpreted as an instrument of communication, an artistic code. The group show investigated how as a system of representation is used as vehicle in artistic terms. The signals emitted by fashion are classed as symbols. Roland Barthes referred to them as codes vestimentaire––dress codes. Whereas fashion is arbitrary in the sense that its referential relationships are open-ended, the artists in the exhibition operate with symbols relating to specific subjects. Dresses turn into codes on behalf of artistic communication.
